I've found no finer interpretation than Zimerman's. His tempo for the second movement is closer to largo; yet he tactfully controls tension. Anything else will sound bland after this.

Fantaisie-Impromptu in C# minor, Op. posth. 66

Composition of the Day 2015.03.10 09:00

Composed by Chopin in 1834 and published posthumously by Julian Fontana in 1855. Chopin had instructed that none of his unpublished manuscripts should be published and it is unknown why he did not publish this work while he was alive.

The mystery may have been solved in 1960 when pianist Artur Rubinstein acquired the "Album of the Baroness d'Este" which had been sold at auction in Paris. The album contained a manuscript of the "Fantaisie-Impromptu" in Chopin's own hand, dated 1835, stating on the title page in French: "Composed for the Baroness d'Este by Frédéric Chopin." Rubinstein surmised that the words "composed for" in place of a "dedicated to" implies that Chopin received a paid commission for the work, so he had actually sold it to the baroness.

Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52

"[. . .] the most exalted, intense and sublimely powerful of all Chopin's compositions... It is unbelievable that it lasts only twelve minutes, for it contains the experience of a lifetime."
- John Ogdon
